Mythological story:
The Ashwini Kumaras are the twin sons of Suryadeva (the Sun God) and his wife Sanjana.Unable to bear the intense radiance of the Sun, Sanjana transformed into a mare and fled to the Earth to meditate in solitude. Suryadeva, deeply in love, transformed himself into a stallion and joined her. From their union in this equine form, the Ashwini Kumaras were born, symbolizing speed, vitality, and the vigor of life.
The Healing of Chyavana Rishi
Chyavana Rishi was a wise but aged and frail sage. Due to his advanced years, he had become weak and immobile, living in a deep meditative state near a forest.Despite his physical condition, he married a beautiful and devoted princess named Sukanya, the daughter of King Sharyati. Sukanya accepted her husband’s age and frailty and faithfully cared for him.
One day, while passing through the forest, the Ashwini Kumaras encountered Sukanya. They were struck by her beauty and devotion to her elderly husband. Curious, they asked why someone as youthful and vibrant as her was with an aged and feeble sage.Sukanya explained her loyalty and the sanctity of her marriage vows. The Ashwini Kumaras, moved by Sukanya’s virtue and Chyavana’s plight, offered to rejuvenate the sage and restore his youth and vitality. In return, they requested that Sukanya ensure her husband taught them a secret ritual that would allow them to partake of Soma, the divine nectar of immortality, which they had been denied access to by other gods. The Ashwini Kumaras prepared a divine healing ritual for Chyavana. They took him to a lake filled with celestial herbs and waters. After performing sacred invocations, they immersed the sage in the lake. When Chyavana emerged, he was completely transformed—radiant, youthful, and full of vitality.Overjoyed by his rejuvenation, Chyavana fulfilled his promise to the Ashwini Kumaras by teaching them the Soma ritual. This act elevated the Ashwini Kumaras to a higher status among the gods, allowing them to partake in the sacred nectar.
